On the Observed Rapid Motions in Extragalactic Radio Sources
Using interferometric methods, radio astronomers have shown that veryrapid motions involving radio jets are detectable in a variety of activecenters: the nuclei of low-redshift radio galaxies, QSOs and BL Lacobjects, and active binary systems containing a black hole or a neutronstar in our own Galaxy. By comparing the positions of about 80extragalactic sources of this type with the position of the galaxies inthe de Vaucouleurs catalog and the updated QSO catalog ofVéron-Cetty and Véron, it is shown that about 50% of themlie within 1° of a low-redshift spiral galaxy, and about 15% lie soclose to galaxies (Δθ<=10') that theassociations are highly significant. Thus, the sources are probablyphysically associated with these galaxies. All the galaxies areclassified as spiral. In addition, many of the sources have other QSOslying very close to them. These results suggest that the motionsobserved in these radio sources, as well as in the nuclei of radiogalaxies and in Galactic microquasars, and perhaps in many more QSOs andother objects, are all similar and are mildly relativistic, and they donot require us to invoke large Lorentz factors. Some of the problemsassociated with this picture are discussed.

1.65-μm (H -band) surface photometry of galaxies - VIII. The near-IR κ space at z =0
We present the distribution of a statistical sample of nearby galaxiesin the κ -space (κ 1 ~logM , κ 2~logI e 3 M /L , κ 3 ~logM /L ).Our study is based on near-IR (H -band: λ =1.65μm)observations, for the first time comprising early- and late-typesystems. Our data confirm that the mean effective dynamicalmass-to-light ratio M /L of the E+S0+S0a galaxies increases withincreasing effective dynamical mass M , as expected from the existenceof the Fundamental Plane relation. Conversely, spiral and Im/BCDgalaxies show a broad distribution in M /L with no detected trend of M/L with M , the former galaxies having M /L values about twice largerthan the latter, on average. For all the late-type galaxies, the M /Lincreases with decreasing effective surface intensity I e ,consistent with the existence of the Tully-Fisher relation. Theseresults are discussed on the basis of the assumptions behind theconstruction of the κ -space and their limitations. Our study iscomplementary to a previous investigation in the optical (B -band:λ =0.44μm) and allows us to study wavelength dependences ofthe galaxy distribution in the κ -space. As a first result, wefind that the galaxy distribution in the κ 1 -κ2 plane reproduces the transition from bulgeless tobulge-dominated systems in galaxies of increasing dynamical mass.Conversely, it appears that the M /L of late-types is higher (lower)than that of early-types with the same M in the near-IR (optical). Theorigins of this behaviour are discussed in terms of dust attenuation andstar formation history.

Kinematics of AWM and MKW Poor Clusters
We have measured 1365 redshifts to a limiting magnitude of R~15.5 in 15AWM/MKW clusters and have collected another 203 from the literature inMKW 4s, MKW 2, and MKW 2s. In AWM 7 we have extended the redshift sampleto R~18 in the cluster center. We have identified 704 cluster members in17 clusters; 201 are newly identified. We summarize the kinematics anddistributions of the cluster galaxies and provide an initial discussionof substructure, mass and luminosity segregation, spectral segregation,velocity-dispersion profiles, and the relation of the central galaxy toglobal cluster properties. We compute optical mass estimates, which wecompare with X-ray mass determinations from the literature. The clustersare in a variety of dynamical states, reflected in the three classes ofbehavior of the velocity-dispersion profile in the core: rising,falling, or flat/ambiguous. The velocity dispersion of the emission-linegalaxy population significantly exceeds that of the absorption-linegalaxies in almost all of the clusters, and the presence ofemission-line galaxies at small projected radii suggests continuinginfall of galaxies onto the clusters. The presence of a cD galaxy doesnot constrain the global cluster properties; these clusters are similarto other poor clusters that contain no cD. We use the similarity of thevelocity-dispersion profiles at small radii and the cD-like galaxies'internal velocity dispersions to argue that cD formation is a localphenomenon. Our sample establishes an empirical observational baselineof poor clusters for comparison with simulations of similar systems.Observations reported in this paper were obtained at the Multiple MirrorTelescope Observatory, a facility operated jointly by the University ofArizona and the Smithsonian Institution; at the Whipple Observatory, afacility operated jointly by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatoryand Harvard University; and at the WIYN Observatory, a joint facility ofthe University of Wisconsin-Madison, Indiana University, YaleUniversity, and the National Optical Astronomy Observatories.

Hα surface photometry of galaxies in the Virgo cluster. IV. The current star formation in nearby clusters of galaxies
Hα +[NII] imaging observations of 369 late-type (spiral) galaxiesin the Virgo cluster and in the Coma/A1367 supercluster are analyzed,covering 3 rich nearby clusters (A1367, Coma and Virgo) and nearlyisolated galaxies in the Great-Wall. They constitute an opticallyselected sample (mp<16.0) observed with ~ 60 %completeness. These observations provide us with the current(T<107 yrs) star formation properties of galaxies that westudy as a function of the clustercentric projected distances (Theta ).The expected decrease of the star formation rate (SFR), as traced by theHα EW, with decreasing Theta is found only when galaxies brighterthan Mp ~ -19.5 are considered. Fainter objects show no orreverse trends. We also include in our analysis Near Infrared data,providing information on the old (T>109 yrs) stars. Puttogether, the young and the old stellar indicators give the ratio ofcurrently formed stars over the stars formed in the past, or``birthrate'' parameter b. For the considered galaxies we also determinethe ``global gas content'' combining HI with CO observations. We definethe ``gas deficiency'' parameter as the logarithmic difference betweenthe gas content of isolated galaxies of a given Hubble type and themeasured gas content. For the isolated objects we find that b decreaseswith increasing NIR luminosity. In other words less massive galaxies arecurrently forming stars at a higher rate than their giant counterpartswhich experienced most of their star formation activity at earliercosmological epochs. The gas-deficient objects, primarily members of theVirgo cluster, have a birthrate significantly lower than the isolatedobjects with normal gas content and of similar NIR luminosity. Thisindicates that the current star formation is regulated by the gaseouscontent of spirals. Whatever mechanism (most plausibly ram-pressurestripping) is responsible for the pattern of gas deficiency observed inspiral galaxies members of rich clusters, it also produces the observedquenching of the current star formation. A significant fraction of gas``healthy'' (i.e. with a gas deficiency parameter less than 0.4) andcurrently star forming galaxies is unexpectedly found projected near thecenter of the Virgo cluster. Their average Tully-Fisher distance isfound approximately one magnitude further away (muo = 31.77)than the distance of their gas-deficient counterparts (muo =30.85), suggesting that the gas healthy objects belong to a cloudprojected onto the cluster center, but in fact lying a few Mpc behindVirgo, thus unaffected by the dense IGM of the cluster. Redshifts for 2410 Galaxies in the Century Survey Region
The Century Survey strip covers 102 deg2 within the limits8h5<=α<=16h5, 29.0d<=δ<=30.0d, equinoxB1950.0. The strip passes through the Corona Borealis supercluster andthe outer region of the Coma cluster. Within the Century Survey region,we have measured 2410 redshifts that constitute four overlappingcomplete redshift surveys: (1) 1728 galaxies with Kron-CousinsRph<=16.13 covering the entire strip, (2) 507 galaxieswith Rph<=16.4 in right ascension range8h32m<=α<=10h45m, equinox B1950.0, (3) 1251 galaxies withabsorption- and K-corrected RCCDc<=16.2 (where ``c''indicates ``corrected'') covering the right ascension range8h5<=α<=13h5, equinox B1950.0, and (4) 1255 galaxieswith absorption- and K-corrected VCCDc<=16.7 also coveringthe right ascension range 8h5<=α<=13h5, equinoxB1950.0. All these redshift samples are more than 98% complete to thespecified magnitude limit. We derived samples 1 and 2 from scans of thePOSS1 red (E) plates calibrated with CCD photometry. We derived samples3 and 4 from deep V and R CCD images covering the entire region. Weinclude coarse morphological types for all the galaxies in sample 1. Thedistribution of (V-R)CCD for each type correspondsappropriately with the classification. Work reported here is basedpartly on observations obtained at the Michigan-Dartmouth-MITObservatory.

V- and R-band Galaxy Luminosity Functions and Low Surface Brightness Galaxies in the Century Survey
We use 64 deg2 of deep V and R CCD images to measure thelocal V- and R-band luminosity functions of galaxies. TheV0<16.7 and R0<16.2 redshift samples contain1255 and 1251 galaxies and are 98.1% and 98.2% complete, respectively.We apply k-corrections before the magnitude selection so that thecompleteness is to the same depth for all spectral types. The V and Rfaint-end slopes are surprisingly identical: α=-1.07+/-0.09.Representative Schechter function parameters for H0=100 are:M*R=-20.88+/-0.09,φ*R=0.016+/-0.003 Mpc-3 andM*V=-20.23+/-0.09,φ*V=0.020+/-0.003 Mpc-3. The V andR local luminosity densities,jR=(1.9+/-0.6)×108 Lsolar andjV=(2.2+/-0.7)×108 Lsolar, are inessential agreement with the recent 2 Degree Field Galaxy RedshiftSurvey and Sloan Digital Sky Survey determinations. All low surfacebrightness (LSB) galaxies fall in the large-scale structure delineatedby high surface brightness galaxies. The properties and surface numberdensity of our LSB galaxies are consistent with the LSB galaxy catalogof O'Neil, Bothun & Cornell, suggesting that our samples arecomplete for LSB galaxies to the magnitude limits. We measure colors,surface brightnesses, and luminosities for our samples, and find strongcorrelations among these galaxy properties. The color-surface brightnessrelation is(V-R)0=(-0.11+/-0.05)μR,0+(2.6+/-0.9).

1.65 μm (H-band) surface photometry of galaxies. V. Profile decomposition of 1157 galaxies
We present near-infrared H-band (1.65 μm) surface brightness profiledecomposition for 1157 galaxies in five nearby clusters of galaxies:Coma, A1367, Virgo, A262 and Cancer, and in the bridge between Coma andA1367 in the ``Great Wall". The optically selected (mpg≤16.0) sample is representative of all Hubble types, from E to Irr+BCD,except dE and of significantly different environments, spanning fromisolated regions to rich clusters of galaxies. We model the surfacebrightness profiles with a de Vaucouleurs r1/4 law (dV), withan exponential disk law (E), or with a combination of the two (B+D).From the fitted quantities we derive the H band effective surfacebrightness (μe) and radius (re) of each component, theasymptotic magnitude HT and the light concentration indexC31. We find that: i) Less than 50% of the Ellipticalgalaxies have pure dV profiles. The majority of E to Sb galaxies is bestrepresented by a B+D profile. All Scd to BCD galaxies have pureexponential profiles. ii) The type of decomposition is a strong functionof the total H band luminosity (mass), independent of the Hubbleclassification: the fraction of pure exponential decompositionsdecreases with increasing luminosity, that of B+D increases withluminosity. Pure dV profiles are absent in the low luminosity rangeLH<1010 L\odot and become dominantabove 1011 L\odot . Arcsecond Positions of UGC Galaxies
We present accurate B1950 and J2000 positions for all confirmed galaxiesin the Uppsala General Catalog (UGC). The positions were measuredvisually from Digitized Sky Survey images with rms uncertaintiesσ<=[(1.2")2+(θ/100)2]1/2,where θ is the major-axis diameter. We compared each galaxymeasured with the original UGC description to ensure high reliability.The full position list is available in the electronic version only.

The Star Formation Properties of Disk Galaxies: Hα Imaging of Galaxies in the Coma Supercluster
We present integrated Hα measurements obtained from imagingobservations of 98 late-type galaxies, primarily selected in the Comasupercluster. These data, combined with Hα photometry from theliterature, include a magnitude-selected sample of spiral (Sa to Irr)galaxies belonging to the ``Great Wall'' complete up to m_p = 15.4, andthus composed of galaxies brighter than M_p = -18.8 (H_0 = 100 km s^-1Mpc^-1). The frequency distribution of the Hα equivalent width,determined for the first time from an optically complete sample, isapproximately Gaussian, peaking at EW ~ 25 Å. We find that, at thepresent limiting luminosity, the star formation properties of spiral +Irr galaxy members of the Coma and A1367 Clusters do not differsignificantly from those of the isolated ones belonging to the GreatWall. The present analysis confirms the well-known increase of thecurrent massive star formation rate (SFR) with Hubble type. Moreover,perhaps a more fundamental anticorrelation exists between the SFR andthe mass of disk galaxies: low-mass spirals and dwarf systems havepresent SFRs ~50 times higher than giant spirals. This result isconsistent with the idea that disk galaxies are coeval, evolving as``closed systems'' with exponentially declining SFR, and that the massof their progenitor protogalaxies is the principal parameter governingtheir evolution. Massive systems having high initial efficiency ofcollapse, or a short collapse timescale, have retained little gas tofeed the present epoch of star formation. These findings support theconclusions of Gavazzi & Scodeggio, who studied the color-massrelation of a local galaxy sample, and agree with the analysis by Cowieet al., who traced the star formation history of galaxies up to z >1. Based on observations made at the Observatorio AstronómicoNacional (OAN), San Pedro Mártir, B.C., of the UniversidadNacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).

The molecular gas content of spiral galaxies in the Coma/A1367 supercluster.
We present ^12^CO(J=1-0) line observations of 73 spiral galaxies mostlyin the Coma/A1367 supercluster. From these data, combined with dataavailable in the literature, we extract the first complete, opticallyselected sample (m_pg_<15.2) of 37 isolated and of 27 clustergalaxies. Adopting a standard conversion factor X=N(H_2_)/I(CO), weestimate that the molecular hydrogen content of isolated spiral galaxiesis, on average, 20% of the atomic hydrogen reservoir, significantlylower than previous estimates based on samples selected by FIR criteria,thus biased towards CO rich objects. We show that the frequencydistributions of the CO deficiency parameter, defined as the differencebetween the expected and the observed molecular gas content of a galaxyof given luminosity (or linear diameter), computed separately forcluster and isolated galaxies, are not significantly different,indicating that the environment does not affect the molecular gascontent of spiral discs. A well defined relationship exists betweenM_i_(H_2_) and the star formation activity in bright galaxies, while itis weaker at lower luminosities. We interpret this finding as indicatingthat CO emission traces relatively well the H_2_ mass only in high-massgalaxies, such as the Milky Way. On the other hand, in low-mass spiralsthe higher far-UV radiation field produced by young O-B stars and thelower metallicity cause the photodissociation of the diffuse moleculargas, weakening the expected relationship between star formation and theCO emission. The conversion factor between the CO line intensity and theamount of molecular hydrogen being ill-determined and variable with theUV flux and abundances, it is difficult to assess the relationshipbetween the star formation and the amount of molecular hydrogen.

1.65 μm (H-band) surface photometry of disk galaxies. I. Observations of 158 galaxies with the Calar Alto 2.2 M telescope.
Near Infrared (H-band) surface photometry of 158 (mostly) disk galaxiesbelonging to the Coma Supercluster and to the A262 and Cancer clusterswas obtained using the 256^2^ NICMOS3 array MAGIC attached to the 2.2mCalar Alto telescope. Magnitudes and diameters within the21.5mag/arcsec^2^ isophote, concentration indices and total H magnitudesare derived.

Colors, luminosities, and masses of disk galaxies. 2: Environmental dependenceis
The B-band and near-infrared (H) luminosity functions of spiral galaxiesare derived for the Coma and A1367 clusters and for a referencepopulation of 'field' galaxies in the Coma supercluster. They areconsistent at the bright end, but they differ significantly at the faintend, indicating an overdensity of spirals with blue color (B-H less than3.0) and faint H luminosity (H greater than -21.5) in clusters withrespect to the field. These objects have disturbed morphology andpeculiar velocities significantly larger than the rest of the clustersample. We discuss these results in the framework of a possibleenvironmental dependence of galaxy evolution, and we conclude thatenhanced current star formation in cluster spiral galaxies might occurdue to molecular gas collapse stimulated by the ram-pressure mechanism.

Imaging and Spectroscopic Observations of the Case Survey Blue/Emission- Line Galaxies
We present CCD imaging and spectroscopic data for 176 blue and/oremission-line galaxies from Lists I and II of the Case Northern SkySurvey. Our sample consists of all Case galaxies which lie in the regionwhich overlaps the original Slice of the Universe survey. We use theobservational data to investigate the physical properties of thegalaxies selected by the survey, to compare with various parameterspublished in the survey lists, and to investigate the selectioncharacteristics and completeness limit of the survey. The majority ofthe Case galaxies are energized by regions of active star formation;only 5% of the sample are Seyfert galaxies. The dual selectiontechniques used (both UV-excess and emission lines) allow the survey todetect star-forming galaxies with a wide range of properties andevolutionary states. In particular, the Case survey selects galaxieswith lower levels of activity than most previous surveys. The surveyalso includes a larger fraction of intermediate and low-luminositygalaxies than would be present in a purely magnitude- limited sample.Although galaxies as faint as m_B_ = 19 are present in the sample, thecompleteness limit of the UV-excess selected portion of the survey iscloser to m_B_ = 16. The luminosity function of the Case galaxies isderived and compared with that of the "normal" field galaxies in thesame volume of space. The shape of the Case luminosity function issimilar to that for the field sample. A surprising result is that 31% ofthe field galaxy population can be accounted for by galaxies of the typeselected in the Case survey.

Kinematics and dynamics of the MKW/AWM poor clusters
We report 472 new redshifts for 416 galaxies in the regions of the 23poor clusters of galaxies originally identified by Morgan, Kayser, andWhite (MKW), and Albert, White, and Morgan (AWM). Eighteen of the poorclusters now have 10 or more available redshifts within 1.5/h Mpc of thecentral galaxy; 11 clusters have at least 20 available redshifts. Basedon the 21 clusters for which we have sufficient velocity information,the median velocity scale is 336 km/s, a factor of 2 smaller than foundfor rich clusters. Several of the poor clusters exhibit complex velocitydistributions due to the presence of nearby clumps of galaxies. We checkon the velocity of the dominant galaxy in each poor cluster relative tothe remaining cluster members. Significantly high relative velocities ofthe dominant galaxy are found in only 4 of 21 poor clusters, 3 of whichwe suspect are due to contamination of the parent velocity distribution.Several statistical tests indicate that the D/cD galaxies are at thekinematic centers of the parent poor cluster velocity distributions.Mass-to-light ratios for 13 of the 15 poor clusters for which we havethe required data are in the range 50 less than or = M/LB(0)less than or = 200 solar mass/solar luminosity. The complex nature ofthe regions surrounding many of the poor clusters suggests that thesegroupings may represent an early epoch of cluster formation. Forexample, the poor clusters MKW7 and MKWS are shown to be gravitationallybound and likely to merge to form a richer cluster within the nextseveral Gyrs. Eight of the nine other poor clusters for which simpletwo-body dynamical models can be carried out are consistent with beingbound to other clumps in their vicinity. Additional complex systems withmore than two gravitationally bound clumps are observed among the poorclusters.

A CCD survey of galaxies. IV. Observations with the 2.1 M telescope at San Pedro Martir.
Continuing a CCD survey of galaxies belonging or projected onto the Comaand Hercules Superclusters, to the A262 and Cancer clusters, we presentisophote maps and photometric profiles in the Johnson system of 111galaxies (67 in the V and B bands, 42 only in V, 2 only in B) obtainedwith the 2.1 m telescope at San Pedro Martir (Baja California, Mexico).

A CCD survey of galaxies. III. Observations with the Loiano 1.5m telescope.
Continuing a CCD survey of galaxies belonging or projected onto the Comaand Hercules Superclusters and to the A262, Virgo and Cancer clusters,we present isophote maps and photometric profiles in the Johnson systemof 127 galaxies (126 taken in the V, 28 of which also in the B band, oneonly in B). For the objects in common we compare our results with thosein the RC3.

Near infrared observations of galaxies in the Coma supercluster and in the Cancer cluster. II
New near infrared observations of 110 galaxies in the Coma/A1367supercluster region, and 40 galaxies in the Cancer cluster arepresented. These observations are part of an ongoing investigation ofthe properties of normal galaxies and of their near-IR emission, whichaims at obtaining homogeneous, multifrequency data for a large sample ofgalaxies in different density environments. The addition of theseobservations to the sample presented in Gavazzi and Trinchieri (1989)raises the number of Coma/A1367 galaxies with near-IR data to 275. Themeasurements, together with data published by Bothun et al. (1985), givea sample of 45 spirals in the Cancer cluster.

21 centimeter study of spiral galaxies in the Coma supercluster. II - Evidence for ongoing gas stripping in five cluster galaxies
High-sensitivity 21 cm observations of 73 galaxies in the Comasupercluster are presented. Seventeen new redshifts are reported. Threegalaxies in A1367 and two in the Coma Cluster are found with remarkablyasymmetrical H I spectra indicating uneven gas distribution in theirdisks. This unstable configuration is interpreted as being due toongoing dynamical gas stripping taking place on time scales shorter thanthose required for differential rotation to redistribute the gas, i.e.,a few times 100 million yr. This suggests that spiral galaxies arecontinuously supplied to the clusters from the surrounding supercluster.

H I survey of face-on galaxies - The frequency of distortions in H I disks
The full results of an H I survey of face-on galaxies are presented andit is shown that narrow H I profiles are rare in normal spiral galaxies.This is due in part to the wider-than-expected range of the integraldispersion and in part to the frequent occurrence of large-scaledistortions in the H I disk. These factors reduce the number of galaxieswith half-power widths less than 30 km/s to about 24 percent of thosethat would occur if galaxies generally had quiescent, coplanar H Idisks. Two useful subsets may be drawn from this study of 212 face-ongalaxies with axial ratios greater than 0.87. Fifty-two spirals of allmorphological types have half-power widths smaller than 100 km/s and maybe used for studies that benefit from a small velocity spread and anenhanced beam-filling factor. About 40 galaxies have velocity widthsmuch larger than expected and are of interest in studies of dynamicallypeculiar systems.

21 centimeter study of spiral galaxies in the Coma supercluster
High-sensitivity, 21 cm line observations of 130 galaxies in theComa/A1367 Supercluster region are presented and used to study thelarge-scale distribution of galaxies in the direction of the ComaSupercluster and the H I content in spiral galaxies as a function of thelocal galaxy density. Groups of galaxies are found to form aquasi-continuous structure that connects the Local Supercluster to theComa Supercluster. This structure is composed of real filaments only inthe vicinity of the Coma Cluster. Spiral galaxies in the surveyed groupsand multiple systems have H I content not dissimilar from that ofisolated galaxies. Galaxies within about 1 Abell radius from the ComaCluster contain about three times less hydrogen on average than isolatedgalaxies. There is a strong tendency for galaxies that are more severelyH I-depleted to be redder and of earlier Hubble type. In the ComaCluster a considerable fraction of late-type, blue galaxies have largedeficiency parameters.

Radio continuum survey of the Coma/A1367 supercluster. II - 1.5 GHz observations of 396 CGCG galaxies
1.5 GHz VLA radio continuum observations of 396 relatively isolated CGCGgalaxies in the Coma/A1367 supercluster yielded the detection of 95objects. These observations, added to the ones presented in previouspapers, form a complete sample of optically selected objects with m(p)equal to or less than 15.3. Two wide-angle-tailed sources have beenfound in smaller groups within the supercluster.

The case low-dispersion northern sky survey. II
Attention is given to objects, whose blue magnitudes range from 11 to18, which were found on low dispersion objective prism plates taken withthe Burrell Schmidt-type telescope at Kitt Peak. Positions, estimatedmagnitudes, and finding charts are presented for 125 blue and/oremission-line galaxies, 120 blue and/or emission line stellar objects(including QSO candidates), and 38 known and probable blue stars.

The Coma/A 1367 filament of galaxies
In the Coma/A 1367 supercluster the surface distribution of galaxiesfrom Zwicky and UGC catalogs outlines a filamentary structure in whichthe Coma cluster itself is embedded. In its densest part the filamentextends for approximately 3.5 h in right ascension and shows an averagedensity contrast of about 2.7 with respect to the nearby regions. Theposition angle of Coma is well oriented along the filament and pointssignificantly toward another cluster of the filament which also shows anelongated shape in the same direction. A sample of new 21-cm redshiftsis used together with the redshifts data available in the literature tostudy the structure of the filament: the majority of the galaxies on itfalls in the velocity range of Coma indicating that the filament is acoherent structure in the three-dimensional space and represents animportant element of the supercluster. The possibility that thefilamentary structure continues at a lower density contrast to bridgethe Lynx-Ursa Major and the Hercules supercluster is discussed.
