The 2MASS Wide-Field T Dwarf Search. II. Discovery of Three T Dwarfs in the Southern Hemisphere
We present the discovery of three new southern hemisphere T dwarfsidentified in the Two Micron All Sky Survey. These objects, 2MASS0348-6022, 2MASS 0516-0445, and 2MASS 2228-4310, have classificationsT7, T5.5, and T6.5, respectively. Using linear absolutemagnitude/spectral type relations derived from T dwarfs with measuredparallaxes, we estimate spectrophotometric distances for thesediscoveries; the closest, 2MASS 0348-6022, is likely within 10 pc of theSun. Proper motions and estimated tangential velocities are consistentwith membership in the Galactic disk population. We also list southernhemisphere T dwarf candidates that were either not found in subsequentnear-infrared imaging observations and are most likely uncataloged minorplanets, or have near-infrared spectra consistent with background stars.

Thefollowing data are listed for each star: identifications, apparentmagnitude, spectral type, apparent diameter in arcsec, absolute radiusin solar units, method of determination, reference, remarks. Commentsand statistics obtained from CADARS are given. The Catalogue isavailable in electronic form at the CDS via anonymous ftp tocdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcar?J/A+A/367/521

A Second Catalog of Orbiting Astronomical Observatory 2 Filter Photometry: Ultraviolet Photometry of 614 Stars
Ultraviolet photometry from the Wisconsin Experiment Package on theOrbiting Astronomical Observatory 2 (OAO 2) is presented for 614 stars.Previously unpublished magnitudes from 12 filter bandpasses withwavelengths ranging from 1330 to 4250 Å have been placed on thewhite dwarf model atmosphere absolute flux scale. The fluxes wereconverted to magnitudes using V=0 for F(V)=3.46x10^-9 ergs cm^-2 s^-1Å^-1, or m_lambda=-2.5logF_lambda-21.15. This second catalogeffectively doubles the amount of OAO 2 photometry available in theliterature and includes many objects too bright to be observed withmodern space observatories.

The ROSAT all-sky survey catalogue of optically bright OB-type stars.
For the detailed statistical analysis of the X-ray emission of hot starswe selected all stars of spectral type O and B listed in the Yale BrightStar Catalogue and searched for them in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. Inthis paper we describe the selection and preparation of the data andpresent a compilation of the derived X-ray data for a complete sample ofbright OB stars.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Empirical temperature calibrations for early-type stars
Three temperature calibrations of suitable photometric quantities havebeen derived for O and B stars. A sample of 120 stars with reliableT(eff.) determinations has been used for establishing each calibration. The different calibrations have been critically discussed and compared.Temperature determinations for 1009 program stars have been obtainedwith an accuracy of the order of 10 percent.

The local system of early type stars - Spatial extent and kinematics
Published uvby and H-beta photometric data and proper motions arecompiled and analyzed to characterize the structure and kinematics ofthe bright early-type O-A0 stars in the solar vicinity, with a focus onthe Gould belt. The selection and calibration techniques are explained, and the data are presented in extensive tables and graphs and discussedin detail. The Gould belt stars of age less than 20 Myr are shown togive belt inclination 19 deg to the Galactic plane and node-lineorientation in the direction of Galactic rotation, while the symmetricaldistribution about the Galactic plane and kinematic properties (purecircular differential rotation) of the belt stars over 60 Myr oldresemble those of fainter nonbelt stars of all ages. The unresolveddiscrepancy between the expansion observed in the youngest nearby starsand the predictions of simple models of expansion from a point isattributed to the inhomogeneous distribution of interstellar matter.

Spectral classification from the ultraviolet line features of S2/68 spectra. V - Supplement series
The paper presents the ultraviolet classification of more than 450 B-Aand F spectra obtained with the sky survey telescope mounted on the TD1satellite. Concerning abnormal objects, attention is given to the Bestars, the binary stars, the helium weak stars, and the lambda Booobjects. With regard to Be stars, it is concluded that the 1930 Awavelength feature is linked to the existence of either shell structuresor Fe II emission lines in the visual spectral range. In addition, it issuggested that stellar spectra at wavelengths of 1410, 1610-20 and 2400A are equivalent to the He-weak group in the classical range.

O I lambda 7773 absorption in optical counterparts of X-ray sources
The existence of a correlation between the absorption equivalent widthof the O I absorption triplet at 7773 A and stellar luminosity isconfirmed by using a sample of 14 B1-B5 stars. This correlation isemployed to investigate the luminosities of six X-ray sourcecounterparts of known spectral type. It is shown that measurement of theequivalent width of the O I 7773-A absorption feature offers a valuabletechnique for determining a star's luminosity class, that this techniquerequires only knowledge of a star's spectral type and is applicable totypes in the range from B1 to about G7, and that X-ray luminosities andsource distances may be obtained independently of other methods. Theidentification of the star MMV (= 4U 1258-61 = 2S 1258-613) as a shellstar is confirmed.

Space velocities and ages of nearby early-type stars
Photometric distances and space velocities have been calculated for 458B0-A0 stars with apparent magnitudes not exceeding 6.5. UsingStromgren's ubvy-beta photometry the effective temperature and theposition in bolometric magnitude over the zero-age main sequence of thestars were derived. These quantities were used to obtain age and massfor 423 of the stars by interpolation in the models of stellar evolutionfor the chemical composition (X Z) = (0.7, 0.03). A relation forderiving interstellar reddening for normal stars in the intermediategroup is given.

Properties of the Walraven VBLUW photometric system
The Walraven five-channel (VBLUW) photometer has been used primarily tostudy Cepheids and RR Lyrae variables. Those properties of the VBLUWphotometric system are discussed which are important for analyzing andinterpreting data on such stars. The standard stars that define thesystem are examined, the long-term stability of these stars is examined, and the responses of the photometric passbands are analyzed. Correctionsfor atmospheric extinction and interstellar reddening are reviewed, noting that color terms in the extinction corrections are sufficientlysmall to be neglected and that nonlinear terms in reddening correctionscan also be neglected provided the reddening is not higher than about1.25 magnitudes. Application of the VBLUW system to the classificationof A, F, and G stars, Hyades main-sequence stars, bright field stars, and subdwarfs is demonstrated, and observed two-color diagrams arecompared with theoretical diagrams based on model atmospheres. It isconcluded that a three-dimensional classification based on effectivetemperature, surface gravity, and heavy-element abundance is possiblefor A, F, and G spectral types and that VBLUW photometry is more thantwice as sensitive as Stroemgren uvby photometry to differences inheavy-element abundances below 8000 K.

Ultraviolet observations of associations in the Large Magellanic Cloud
Ultraviolet observations in a region close to 30 Doradus, made with theNetherlands Astronomical Satellite (ANS), are presented. The resultsindicate that part of the observed reddening is intrinsic to the LargeMagellanic Cloud and that the extinction law differs from the averageextinction law in the solar neighborhood.

The ultraviolet experiment onboard the astronomical Netherlands satellite - ANS
The ultraviolet experiment package on board the ANS consists of a 22 cmdiameter Cassegrain telescope, followed by a five channel intermediateband spectrophotometer. The instrument response function for eachbandpass is almost rectangular. The central wavelengths are 155, 180,220, 250 and 330 nm respectively. The in-orbit performance of theinstrument is according to expectations. Observational results of sometypical objects are summarized to illustrate the capabilities of theinstrument.
