Herbig Ae/Be Stars in nearby OB Associations
We have carried out a study of the early-type stars in nearby OBassociations spanning an age range of ~3-16 Myr, with the aim ofdetermining the fraction of stars that belong to the Herbig Ae/Be class.We studied the B, A, and F stars in the nearby (<=500 pc) OBassociations Upper Scorpius, Perseus OB2, Lacerta OB1, and Orion OB1,with membership determined from Hipparcos data. We also included in ourstudy the early-type stars in the Trumpler 37 cluster, part of the CepOB2 association. We obtained spectra for 440 Hipparcos stars in theseassociations, from which we determined accurate spectral types, visualextinctions, effective temperatures, luminosities and masses, usingHipparcos photometry. Using colors corrected for reddening, we find thatthe Herbig Ae/Be stars and the classical Be (CBe) stars occupy clearlydifferent regions in the JHK diagram. Thus, we use the location on theJHK diagram, as well as the presence of emission lines and of strong 12μm flux relative to the visual, to identify the Herbig Ae/Be stars inthe associations. We find that the Herbig Ae/Be stars constitute a smallfraction of the early-type stellar population even in the youngerassociations. Comparing the data from associations with different agesand assuming that the near-infrared excess in the Herbig Ae/Be starsarises from optically thick dusty inner disks, we determined theevolution of the inner disk frequency with age. We find that the innerdisk frequency in the age range 3-10 Myr in intermediate-mass stars islower than that in the low-mass stars (<1 Msolar) inparticular, it is a factor of ~10 lower at ~3 Myr. This indicates thatthe timescales for disk evolution are much shorter in theintermediate-mass stars, which could be a consequence of more efficientmechanisms of inner disk dispersal (viscous evolution, dust growth, andsettling toward the midplane).

Catalogue of averaged stellar effective magnetic fields. I. Chemically peculiar A and B type stars
This paper presents the catalogue and the method of determination ofaveraged quadratic effective magnetic fields < B_e > for 596 mainsequence and giant stars. The catalogue is based on measurements of thestellar effective (or mean longitudinal) magnetic field strengths B_e,which were compiled from the existing literature.We analysed the properties of 352 chemically peculiar A and B stars inthe catalogue, including Am, ApSi, He-weak, He-rich, HgMn, ApSrCrEu, andall ApSr type stars. We have found that the number distribution of allchemically peculiar (CP) stars vs. averaged magnetic field strength isdescribed by a decreasing exponential function. Relations of this typehold also for stars of all the analysed subclasses of chemicalpeculiarity. Radial velocities. Measurements of 2800 B2-F5 stars for HIPPARCOS
Radial velocities have been determined for a sample of 2930 B2-F5 stars,95% observed by the Hipparcos satellite in the north hemisphere and 80%without reliable radial velocity up to now. Observations were obtainedat the Observatoire de Haute Provence with a dispersion of 80Ä,mm(-1) with the aim of studying stellar and galactic dynamics.Radial velocities have been measured by correlation with templates ofthe same spectral class. The mean obtained precision is 3.0 km s(-1)with three observations. A new MK spectral classification is estimatedfor all stars. The HR-diagram from HIPPARCOS data. Absolute magnitudes and kinematics of BP - AP stars
The HR-diagram of about 1000 Bp - Ap stars in the solar neighbourhoodhas been constructed using astrometric data from Hipparcos satellite aswell as photometric and radial velocity data. The LM method\cite{luri95,luri96} allows the use of proper motion and radial velocitydata in addition to the trigonometric parallaxes to obtain luminositycalibrations and improved distances estimates. Six types of Bp - Apstars have been examined: He-rich, He-weak, HgMn, Si, Si+ and SrCrEu.Most Bp - Ap stars lie on the main sequence occupying the whole width ofit (about 2 mag), just like normal stars in the same range of spectraltypes. Their kinematic behaviour is typical of thin disk stars youngerthan about 1 Gyr. A few stars found to be high above the galactic planeor to have a high velocity are briefly discussed. Based on data from theESA Hipparcos astrometry satellite and photometric data collected in theGeneva system at ESO, La Silla (Chile) and at Jungfraujoch andGornergrat Observatories (Switzerland). Far-ultraviolet stellar photometry: A field in Orion
Far-ultraviolet photometry for 625 objects in Orion is presented. Thesedata were extracted from electrographic camera images obtained duringsounding rocket flights in 1975 and 1982. The 1975 images were centeredclose to the belt of Orion while the 1982 images were centeredapproximately 9 deg further north. One hundred and fifty stars fell inthe overlapping region and were observed with both cameras. Sixty-eightpercent of the objects were tentatively identified with known starsusing the SIMBAD database while another 24% are blends of objects tooclose together to separate with our resolution. As in previous studies,the majority of the identified ultraviolet sources are early-type stars.However, there are a significant number for which no such identificationwas possible, and we suggest that these are interesting objects whichshould be further investigated. Seven stars were found which were brightin the ultraviolet but faint in the visible. We suggest that some ofthese are nearby white dwarfs.

Homogeneous Walraven (VBLUW) photometry is presented for 5260 stars inthe regions of five nearby southern OB associations: Scorpio Centaurus(Sco OB2), Orion OB1, Canis Major OB1, Monoceros OB1, and Scutum OB2.Derived V and (B - V) in the Johnson system are included.

Empirical temperature calibrations for early-type stars
Three temperature calibrations of suitable photometric quantities havebeen derived for O and B stars. A sample of 120 stars with reliableT(eff.) determinations has been used for establishing each calibration.The different calibrations have been critically discussed and compared.Temperature determinations for 1009 program stars have been obtainedwith an accuracy of the order of 10 percent.

The BP stars in the Orion OB 1 association
For 24 Bp stars in the Ori OB 1 association, 6-m telescope spectrogramsof 9-A/mm dispersion in the 3900-4900 A range yield a quantitativespectral classification, peculiarity type, effective temperature surfacegravity, and rotational velocity. Although Ori OB 1 contains Bp starswith a variety of definite peculiarities, it lacks cool (10,000 K) Apstars, probably because the late-A members have not yet reached thezero-age main sequence.

A catalog of ultraviolet interstellar extinction excesses for 1415 stars
Ultraviolet interstellar extinction excesses are presented for 1415stars with spectral types B7 and earlier. The excesses with respect to Vare derived from Astronomical Netherlands Satellite (ANS) 5-channel UVphotometry at central wavelengths of approximately 1550, 1800, 2500, and3300 A. A measure of the excess extinction in the 2200-A extinction bumpis also given. The data are valuable for investigating the systematicsof peculiar interstellar extinction and for studying the character of UVinterstellar extinction in the general direction of stars for which theextinction-curve shape is unknown.

Stellar content of young open clusters. III - The 'sn' stars
Twelve out of 16 stars in the sample of 17 cluster stars belonging tothe recently recognized class of 'sn' stars have V sin i values lowerthan 50 km/sec. It is ascertained that this represents true lowrotation, and does not result from an inclination effect, therebyexcluding both the pole-on hypothesis and the shell-like nature of thesharp lines as probable explanations. Either the 'sn' stars are thenormal state of slowly rotating stars, or they are peculiar. If thelatter, then normal rotating stars cannot exist for more than 50 millionyears before developing any peculiarity.

Decaying stellar magnetic fields, magnetic braking - Evidence from magnetic observations in Orion OB1
The magnetic fields of 13 Ap and helium-weak stars in the Orion OB 1association are observed and compared to those of older magnetic stars.It is found that the magnetic stars in Orion have magnetic fieldsstronger than those of the older stars by a factor of three, inagreement with a fossil origin of the fields. The short e-folding timeof decay, which is estimated to be of the order of 100 million years, isseen as evidence for the view that internal mass motions are present inupper-main-sequence stars, with potentially important effects on theirevolution. The periods of variation, although uncertain, suggest thatyoung magnetic stars rotate faster than their older counterparts. Thisdifference implies magnetic braking on the main sequence.

The fundamental physical parameters of main-sequence and near main-sequence B type stars as derived from uvby,beta photometry
From spectrophotometric measurements of hydrogen line intensities, uvbyphotometry and photoelectrically determined H-beta and H-gamma indicesof 75 B2-B6 main-sequence stars, effective temperature and surfacegravity are derived by using the model atmospheres computed by Kurucz(1974). Comparisons between the g values and the MK luminosityclassification show good agreement for the MK standard stars but ratherserious disagreement for the average stars in such a way that most ofthe stars classified in luminosity class V really belong to class IV.Using the evolutionary model sequences calculated by Hejlesen et al.(1972) the stellar mass, age and luminosity are determined from the uvbyand beta data through effective temperature and surface gravity. Thetheoretically derived luminosities are in excellent agreement with theluminosities derived by calibrations.

The occurrence of abnormal stars in open clusters
The age dependence of the frequencies of various types of abnormal starsin open clusters and associations is discussed. Spectra acquired atdispersions of 39 A/mm and 129 A/mm were used to determine the spectraltypes and luminosity classes of 661 stars in 14 open clusters andassociations. The frequencies of Ap(Si), Ap(Hg,Mn) and Ap(Sr,Cr) starsare found to increase with age to a level about that of field stars,while the rotational velocities of Ap(Si) and Ap(Hg,Mn) stars decreasewith time. Be stars in clusters exhibit a relatively constant frequency,roughly equal to that of Be field stars. The frequencies of stars withpronounced shell spectra are observed to remain constant with age, whilestars with unusually broad hydrogen lines (Vb stars) occur only in theyoungest clusters. The frequency of Am stars in clusters is notsignificantly different from that of field stars, and does not seem todepend on age, although rotational velocity is seen to decrease. It isconcluded that Ap or Am stars develop from stars of various rotationalspeeds, with a subsequent decrease in rotational velocity.

A photometric study of the Orion OB 1 association. I - Observational data.
A catalog of observational data is presented for stars in the region ofthe young stellar association Orion OB 1. Photoelectric observationsobtained in the uvby-beta and UBV systems are compiled along withprevious photoelectric and spectroscopic data for all these stars aswell as for several bright members of the association with availablephotometric indices. Mean weighted values are computed for thephotometric data and summarized in tables expected to be reasonablycomplete for association members earlier than spectral type A0.Membership criteria are derived, and qualitative membershipprobabilities summarized, for the 526 stars in the final program. Theanalytical procedures are discussed for association stars of B,intermediate, and AF types. Effects of the nebular environment andvarious calibrations of Balmer-line and four-color indices areconsidered for the determination of absolute magnitudes for the B-typestars.
