The Nature of Interstellar Gas toward the Pleiades Revealed in Absorption Lines
We present high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio absorption-lineobservations of CN, Ca II, Ca I, CH+, and CH along 20 linesof sight toward members of the Pleiades. The acquired data enable themost detailed study to date of the interaction between cluster stars andthe surrounding interstellar gas. Total equivalent widths are consistentwith previous investigations, except where weaker features are detectedowing to our greater sensitivity. Mean b-values for the molecularspecies indicate that toward most of the Pleiades, CH is associated withthe production of CH+ rather than CN. An analysis of radialvelocities reveals a kinematic distinction between ionized atomic gasand molecular and neutral gas. Molecular components are found withvelocities in the local standard of rest of either ~+7 or ~+9.5 kms-1, with the higher velocity components being associatedwith the strongest absorption. Atomic gas traced by Ca II shows a strongcentral component at vLSR~+7 km s-1, exhibitingvelocity gradients indicative of cloud-cluster interactions. Gas densityestimates derived from measured CH/CH+ column density ratiosshow good agreement with those inferred from H2 rotationalpopulations, yielding typical values of n~50 cm-3. Our modelsdo not include the important time-dependent effects on CH+formation, which may ultimately be needed to extract physical conditionsin these clouds.

Near-infrared line spectropolarimetry of hot massive stars
In order to study the inner parts of the circumstellar material aroundoptically faint infrared bright objects, we present the firstmedium-resolution spectropolarimetric data taken in the near-infrared.In this paper, we discuss Paβ line data of GL 490, a well-knownembedded massive young stellar object, and of MWC 349A and MWC 342, twooptically faint stars that are proposed to be in the pre-main-sequencephase of evolution. As a check on the method, the classical Be starζ Tau, known to display line polarization changes at opticalwavelengths, was observed as well. Three of our targets show a `lineeffect' across Paβ. For ζ Tau and MWC 349A, this line effectis due to depolarization by a circumstellar electron-scattering disc. Inboth cases, the position angle of the polarization is consistent withthat of the larger scale discs imaged at other wavelengths, validatinginfrared spectropolarimetry as a means to detect flattening on smallscales. The tentative detection of a rotation in the polarizationposition angle at Paβ in the embedded massive young stellar objectGL 490 suggests the presence of a small-scale rotating accretion discwith an inner hole - similar to those recently discovered at opticalwavelengths in Herbig Ae and T Tauri stars.

Interstellar Matter near the Pleiades. VI. Evidence for an Interstellar Three-Body Encounter
This paper seeks a comprehensive interpretation of new data on Na Iabsorption toward stars in and near the Pleiades, together with existingvisible and infrared data on the distribution of dust and with radiodata on H I and CO in the cluster vicinity. The use of dust and gasmorphology to constrain tangential motions in connection with themeasured radial velocities yields estimates for the space motion of gasnear the Pleiades. Much of the kinematic complexity in the interstellarabsorption toward the Pleiades, including the presence of stronglyblueshifted components that arise in shocked gas, finds explanation inthe interaction between the cluster and foreground gas withVr(LSR)~7 km s-1 associated with the Taurus dustclouds. Taurus gas, however, cannot readily account for an absorptioncomponent having Vr(LSR)~10 km s-1 with a wide,but not continuous distribution and 21 cm emission from gas in thecluster having Vr(LSR)~0 km s-1 associated witheast-west dust filaments. Successive hypotheses for the origin of theseadditional features include Taurus gas at a higher velocity than thepervasive foreground component, additional gas at a radial velocityintermediate between that of the Taurus component and the cluster, and acloud having Vr(LSR)~10 km s-1 approaching thePleiades from the west. A satisfactory account of the full complexity ofthe interstellar medium near the Pleiades requires the last feature andthe Taurus gas, both interacting with the Pleiades and also with eachother.

Discovery of Highly Dynamic Matter Enhancements along the Polar Axis and Equatorial Plane in the Luminous Blue Variable Binary HD 5980
HD 5980 is a W-R+O eclipsing binary in the Small Magellanic Cloud thathas attracted considerable attention since it underwent a luminous bluevariable (LBV)-type outburst in 1994. Since then, intense spectroscopicand photometric monitoring have revealed the presence of periodicvariability on a timescale of 6-7 hr that cannot be explained by ourcurrent understanding of the system. In this paper, we present the firstresults from our polarimetric observations around secondary eclipse whenthe assumed Wolf-Rayet (W-R) star passes in front of the assumed LBVcomponent (phase φ=0.36). These data confirm the presence ofstochastic polarimetric variability on a typical timescale of ~30minutes, reaching a very high amplitude of almost 1% on our last of fivenights. At that time, we also found that the mass loss, which isresponsible for the polarimetric variability, presented fluctuations inaxial symmetry ranging from very rapid density enhancements along theorbital plane to polar ejections. We propose that either a fast rotatormodel for the W-R star or the presence of a close orbiting neutron starcould qualitatively explain the observed polarimetric, spectroscopic,and photometric behavior. The evidence presented in this paper iscrucial for an understanding of the erratic behavior of this importantbinary and should be taken into account in any consistent model of thesystem.

Kinematical Structure of the Local Interstellar Medium: The Galactic Anticenter Hemisphere
A survey of interstellar Na I D1 and D2 absorption features in thespectra of 104 early-type stars in the second and third Galacticquadrants reveals the large-scale kinematics of the interstellar gaswithin the Galactic anticenter hemisphere at distances from the Sunbetween ~70 and ~250 pc. Employing a technique that uses both the radialvelocities and column densities of the Na I absorptions produced by theintervening gas we have identified the velocity vectors and determinedthe spatial distribution of eight interstellar clouds in the volumeexplored. The average internal H I+H2 densities of the cloudsrange between 0.03 and 1.7 cm-3, and their masses between 80and 104 Msolar, although uncertainties in thesizes of the clouds, their possible extension beyond the regionexplored, and the presence of denser gas embedded in the larger cloudsimply that these will tend to be lower limits. We have clearlyidentified clumps of denser gas immersed in the low-density gas in oneof the clouds; these clumps show internal H I+H2 densities oforder 50 cm-3. Although we are not able to detect anyinterstellar Na I within 70 pc, the sizes of some of the clouds implythat their near edges are within that range of distances from the Sun.With respect to the local standard of rest the clouds move withvelocities between 19 and 54 km s-1. Their velocity vectorsdo not support the view of a local interstellar medium uniquelydominated by expansion from centers in the Scorpio-Centaurus OBassociation; our results suggest that this expansion is present in theGalactic center hemisphere but in the Galactic anticenter hemisphere isrestricted to the immediate neighborhood of the Sun.

Barnard's Merope Nebula Revisited: New Observational Results
IC 349 is a small, fan-shaped reflection nebula located only 30" from 23Tau; its nucleus is, by a factor 15, the brightest area of the Pleiadesnebulosity. We propose that IC 349 is a fragment of the Taurus-Aurigamolecular cloud that has been encountered by the Pleiades in thatcluster's southward motion and is being illuminated and shaped by theradiation field of 23 Tau. New Hubble Space Telescope multicolor imageryand the structure, colors, and surface brightness of IC 349 arediscussed in terms of that hypothesis. What is known of the propermotion of the nebula, what can be inferred of the properties of thenebula from its color, and what is expected from radiation pressuretheory appear to be compatible with this cloudlet-encounter hypothesis.

Interstellar Matter Near the Pleiades. V. Observations of NA I toward 36 Stars
This paper reports high-resolution, moderate to high signal-to-noiseratio observations of 23 certain Pleiades members, four possiblemembers, and nine nonmembers in the Na I D lines, as well asobservations of 12 of the stars in the Na I ultraviolet doublet. Inspite of the relative proximity of the stars to the sun (even most ofthe nonmembers lie within 200 pc), the line profiles exhibit remarkablecomplexity, with up to five absorption components and equally remarkablestar-to-star variation. The velocity range, 2-20 km s-1,conforms well to the range expected for gas deflected by the passage ofthe cluster. The paper includes a careful discussion of uncertainties inthe data, the most important conclusions of which are that the velocityscatter is consistent with that expected from random errors in thewavelength calibration and that systematic errors probably are <~0.1km s-1. Appendices detail the choice of stellar data and theprocedure adopted for removing telluric absorption lines. Analysisfollows in a separate paper.

Catalogue of Apparent Diameters and Absolute Radii of Stars (CADARS) - Third edition - Comments and statistics
The Catalogue, available at the Centre de Données Stellaires deStrasbourg, consists of 13 573 records concerning the results obtainedfrom different methods for 7778 stars, reported in the literature. Statistics of binaries in the Pleiades cluster
We present a statistical analysis of binaries in galactic clusters,based on photometric properties. Synthetic clusters are used to solvethe deconvolution problem. If the colour-magnitude relation for singlestars is given and if triple stars are treated as binaries, thedistribution of systems in a colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) can be usedto determine cluster properties. They include the maximum number ofsingle stars N1max which is compatible with the distributionof systems, a standard deviation sigma (describing the scatter of starson the main sequence), a critical mass ratio q_c, and the mass ratiodistribution in the case of N_1=N1max. In the general case(N_1<= N1max) the mass ratio distribution can bedetermined for q>q_c, and in favourable cases (if N_1 is sufficientlylarge) for all mass ratios. A first application concerns thePleiades cluster in the colour range 0.2<= B-V<0.98. The concentration of systems near the main sequence in the CMDis used to derive an approximation for the colour-magnitude relation. Asmall positive number c is involved as a parameter. The mass ratiodistribution depends sensitively on c and increases towards small massratios, at least up to q =~ 0.5 and probably up to q =~ 0.3. Thedistribution is bimodal, with a peak at q=1. Photometric arguments showthat c<~ 0.02. A binary frequency of 60-70% as expected from clustersimulations (Kroupa \cite{krou}) requires c<~ 0.03. An adjustment oftwo parameters (c=0.02 and a 70% binary frequency) is sufficient toreproduce the mass ratio distribution for binaries in the galacticfield. This suggests that the mass ratio distribution in the Pleiades issimilar to the distribution in the field, in accordance with aconjecture of Bouvier et al. (\cite{brn}, BRN).

Deep ROSAT HRI observations of the Pleiades
In a deep X-ray survey of the Pleiades open cluster, we use the ROSATHigh Resolution Imager to explore a region of the cluster formerlysurveyed with the PSPC. These new observations substantially improveupon both the sensitivity and the spatial resolution for this region ofthe Pleiades, allowing us to detect 18 cluster members not detectedbefore and 16 members not included in the catalogs used in previoussurveys. The high sensitivity of the present observations permits us toobtain more stringent upper limits for 72 additional members and alsoprovides sufficient numbers of stars to enable us to explore thedependence of L_x on stellar rotation for the slow rotators of thePleiades. Using the new high sensitivity X-ray observations and therecent rotational measurements we discuss the activity-rotationrelationship in the Pleiades solar type stars. We also present newphotometric observations of optical counterparts of a number of X-raysources detected in previous surveys but not yet identified. UBV polarimetry of 361 A- and F-type stars in selected areas
We present simultaneous UBV linear polarization measurements for 361 A-and F-type stars with accurate colour excess and distance determination.These stars are distributed in 35 Kapteyn's Selected Areas, covering thethird and fourth quadrants of the galactic plane (|b| <= 30degr ).The obtained polarization and the known colour excess are compared. Ananalysis of the polarization distribution as a function of the stellardistance is also performed. Based on observations collected at theEuropean Southern Observatory (ESO), La Silla, Chile.

Spectrophotometry of 237 Stars in 7 Open Clusters
Spectrophotometry is presented for 237 stars in 7 nearby open clusters:Hyades, Pleiades, Alpha Persei, Praesepe, Coma Berenices, IC 4665, andM39. The observations were taken by Lee McDonald and David Bursteinusing the Wampler single-channel scanner on the Crossley 0.9m telescopeat Lick Observatory from July 1973 through December 1974. Sixteenbandpasses spanning the spectral range 3500 Angstroms to 7780 Angstromswere observed for each star, with bandwidths 32Angstroms, 48 Angstromsor 64 Angstroms. Data are standardized to the Hayes-Latham system tomutual accuracy of 0.016 mag per passband. The accuracy of thespectrophotometry is assessed in three ways on a star-by-star basis.First, comparisons are made with previously published spectrophotometryfor 19 stars observed in common. Second, (B-V) colors and uvby colorsare compared for 236 stars and 221 stars, respectively. Finally,comparsions are made for 200 main sequence stars to the spectralsynthesis models of Kurucz, fixing log g = 4.0 and [Fe/H] = 0.0, andonly varying effective temperature. The accuracy of tests using uvbycolors and the Kurucz models are shown to track each other closely,yielding an accuracy estimate (1 sigma ) of 0.01 mag for the 13 colorsformed from bandpasses longward of the Balmer jump, and 0.02 mag for the3 colors formed from the three bandpasses below the Balmer jump. Incontrast, larger scatter is found relative to the previously publishedspectrophotometry of Bohm-Vitense & Johnson (16 stars in common) andGunn & Stryker (3 stars). We also show that the scatter in the fitsof the spectrophotometric colors and the uvby filter colors is areasonable way to identify the observations of which specific stars areaccurate to 1 sigma , 2 sigma , .... As such, the residuals from boththe filter color fits and the Kurucz model fits are tabulated for eachstar where it was possible to make a comparison, so users of these datacan choose stars according to the accuracy of the data that isappropriate to their needs. The very good agreement between the modelsand these data verifies the accuracy of these data, and also verifiesthe usefulness of the Kurucz models to define spectrophotometry forstars in this temperature range (>5000 K). These data define accuratespectrophotometry of bright, open cluster stars that can be used as asecondary flux calibration for CCD-based spectrophotometric surveys.

The Structure of the Galactic Magnetic Field toward the High-Latitude Clouds
We present the results of an optical polarization survey toward thegalactic anticenter, in the area 5h >= alpha >= 2h and 6 deg <=delta <= 12 deg. This region is characterized by the presence of astream of high-velocity H I as well as high galactic latitude molecularclouds. We used our polarization data together with 100 mu m IRAS mapsof the region to study the relation between the dust distribution andthe geometry of the magnetic field. We find that there is a correlationbetween the percent polarization and the 100 mu m flux such that P(%)<= (0.16 +/- 0.05)F100. When the IRAS flux is converted into H Icolumn densities this becomes P(%) <= (0.13 +/- 0.03)N20 - 0.22,which is consistent with previous interstellar medium studies on therelation between reddening and polarization. This correlation indicatesthat our survey is as deep as IRAS and that the magnetic field geometrydoes not change strongly with the optical depth in the lines of sightthat we have studied. The implied lower limit to the distance of oursurvey is 500--700 pc at galactic latitudes b = -20 deg and 100 pc at b= -50 deg. Our main finding is that the magnetic field is perpendicularto the H I high-velocity stream as well as the molecular cloud MBM 16 inthe high-latitude region. The field is also perpendicular to thevelocity gradient in the stream. Closer to the plane, the magnetic fieldis parallel to the dust filaments that extend like a plume toward thehalo. Our observations indicate that the galactic magnetic field towardthe high-latitude clouds is toroidal. We propose a model in which fluxtubes that rise out of the galactic plane become force-free andpredominantly toroidal at high latitudes. The high-latitude clouds maybe gas streams that are falling back toward the galactic plane withinsuch buoyant braided ropes of magnetic flux.

We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Polarimetry of the exceptionally long-period eclipsing polar RX J0515.6+0105
Photopolarimetric observations of RX J0515.6+0105 confirm that thissystem is a polar (i.e. an AM Herculis system). Circular polarization,varying from -2 to 2 per cent, was measured over an interval of sevennights. Furthermore, a periodogram analysis of the data reveals a 7.99-hperiod, consistent with the photometrically determined orbital period.This makes RX J0515.6+0105 the longest period polar, exceeding theerstwhile longest period system by ~3.3h. Although the degree of linearpolarization is low, there is some evidence for a linear polarization`spike' near orbital phase 0.5, corresponding to when the circularpolarization changes sign. Also, the maximum and minimum values of thecircular polarization are seen to coincide with the intensity maxima.These characteristics are evidence for two regions of cyclotron emissionof differing polarity, and argue in favour of cyclotron beaming as thelikely explanation for the prominent humps in the light curves. Thenear-zero circular polarization at eclipse implies that the cyclotronemitting region is offset from the line of centres of the stars by ~90deg. The presence of likely cyclotron spectral features implies amagnetic field strength of <~61 MG, which is well below the valueinferred from Patterson's synchrontron criterion. This is taken asevidence for a much lower accretion rate than the empirical M_solar(P)relation would imply.

Membership probabilities in the Pleiades field.
A catalogue of proper motions and photographic B, V magnitudes for starsup to B=19mag within a region centered near Alcyone is presented. Thecatalogue is based on MAMA measurements of 8 plates taken with theTautenburg Schmidt telescope. The survey includes ca. 14500 stars andcovers a total field of about 9 square degrees. For stars brighter thanB=18mag an internal accuracy of 0.05mag and 2.5mas/year has beenestimated for photometric data and proper motions, respectively.Membership probabilities, proper motions and B, V magnitudes are listedfor 442 stars up to B=19mag in the Pleiades field.

The structure of the galactic halo outside the solar circle as traced by the blue horizontal branch stars
A complete sample of blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars in the magnituderange 13.0 less than or equal to V less than or equal to 16.5 isisolated in two Galactic fields that have previously been searched forRR Lyrae variables: SA 57 in the Northern Polar Cap and the LickAstrograph field RR 7 in the Anticenter (l = 183 deg, b = +37 deg).These BHB stars are a subset of the AF stars found in the CaseLow-Dispersion Northern Survey; lists of these AF stars were madeavailable by the late Nick Sanduleak. In the color range 0.00 less thanor equal to (B - V)0 less than or equal to +0.20, we candistinguish the BHB stars among these AF stars by comparing them bothwith well known local field horizontal branch (FHB) stars and also theBHB members of the halo globular clusters M3 and M92. The criteria forthis comparison include (1) a (u - B)K color index (derivedfrom photoelectric observations using the Stroemgren u filter and theJohnson B and V filters) that measures the size of the Balmer jump, (2)a spectrophotometric index lambda that measures the steepness of theBalmer jump, and (3) a parameter D0.2 that is the mean widthof the H-delta and H-gamma Balmer lines measured at 20 percent of thecontinuum level. These criteria give consistent results in separatingBHB stars from higher gravity main sequence AF stars in the color range0.00 less than or equal to (B - V)0 less than or equal to+0.20. All three photometric and spectrophotometric criteria weremeasured for 35 stars in the SA 57 field and 37 stars in the RR 7 fieldthat are in the color range (B - V)0 less than or equal to+0.23 and in the magnitude range 13.0 less than or equal to V less thanor equal to 16.5. For a small number of additional stars only (u -B)K was obtained. Among the AF stars that are fainter than B= 13 and bluer than (B - V)0 = +0.23, about half of those inthe SA 57 field and about one third of those in the lower latitude RR 7field are BHB stars. Isoabundance contours were located empirically inplots of the pseudoequivalent width versus (B - V)0 for thelines of Mg II lambda-4481 A, Ca II lambda-3933 A, and Fe I lambda-4272A. Solar abundances were defined by the data from main sequence stars inthe Pleiades and Coma open clusters. Data from the BHB stars in M3 andM92 defined the (Fe/H) = -1.5 and -2.2 isoabundance contours,respectively. Metallicities of all stars were estimated by interpolatingthe measured pseudoequivalent widths in these diagrams at the observed(B - V)0. The distribution of (Fe/H) found for the BHB starsin this way is very similar to that which we found for the RR Lyraestars in the same fields using the Preston Delta-S method. The spacedensities of these BHB stars were analyzed both separately and togetherwith earlier observations of field BHB stars. This analysis supports atwo-component model for the halo of our Galaxy that is similar in manyrespects to that proposed by Hartwick although our discussion refersonly to the region outside the solar circle.

A reassessment of some polarization standard stars
There have been recent reports suggesting that several polarizedstandard stars exhibit variability. In the investigation here, weconcentrate on the work of Bastien et al. (AJ, 495, 900 (1988)) whoclaim that the majority of their measurements reveal instability of thecataloged standards (11 stars out of 13). We criticize their statisticalassessments and comment on the shortcomings in their data and analyses.Firstly, it is demonstrated that their test based on comparisons ofinternal and external variances does not give rise to criteria forassessing variability. Secondly, their normality tests based on kurtosisand skewness are also shown to be fallacious and that in any case theylack rigor. Problems with the homogeneity of the observations arediscussed with respect to dead-time corrections, instrumentalpolarization and modulation efficiency, all of which may give rise tovariable systematic errors within the pooled data. For four stars whichhave sufficient homogeneous measurements, tests previously used oncatalogs of unpolarized stars have been adopted to investigate the dataand only one star (HD 111613) provides firm evidence for variability.

A deep imaging survey of the Pleiades with ROSAT
We have obtained deep ROSAT images of three regions within the Pleiadesopen cluster. We have detected 317 X-ray sources in these ROSAT PositionSensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) images, 171 of which we associatewith certain or probable members of the Pleiades cluster. We detectnearly all Pleiades members with spectral types later than G0 and within25 arcminutes of our three field centers where our sensitivity ishighest. This has allowed us to derive for the first time the luminosityfunction for the G, K, amd M dwarfs of an open cluster without the needto use statistical techniques to account for the presence of upperlimits in the data sample. Because of our high X-ray detection frequencydown to the faint limit of the optical catalog, we suspect that some ofour unidentified X-ray sources are previously unknown, very low-massmembers of Pleiades. A large fraction of the Pleiades members detectedwith ROSAT have published rotational velocities. Plots ofLX/LBol versus spectroscopic rotational velocityshow tightly correlated `saturation' type relations for stars with ((B -V)0) greater than or equal to 0.60. For each of several colorranges, X-ray luminosities rise rapidly with increasing rotation rateuntil c sin i approximately equal to 15 km/sec, and then remainsessentially flat for rotation rates up to at least v sin i approximatelyequal to 100 km/sec. The dispersion in rotation among low-mass stars inthe Pleiades is by far the dominant contributor to the dispersion inLX at a given mass. Only about 35% of the B, A, and early Fstars in the Pleiades are detected as X-ray sources in our survey. Thereis no correlation between X-ray flux and rotation for these stars. TheX-ray luminosity function for the early-type Pleiades stars appears tobe bimodal -- with only a few exceptions, we either detect these starsat fluxes in the range found for low-mass stars or we derive X-raylimits below the level found for most Pleiades dwarfs. The X-ray spectrafor the early-type Pleiades stars detected by ROSAT areindistinguishable from the spectra of the low-mass Pleiades members. Webelieve that the simplest explanation for this behavior is that theearly-type Pleiades stars are not themselves intrinsic X-ray sources andthat the X-ray emission actually arises from low-mass companions tothese stars.

Chemical transitions for interstellar C2 and CN in cloud envelopes
Observations were made of absorption from CH, C2, and CN towardmoderately reddened stars in Sco, OB2, Ceo OB3, and Taurus/Auriga. Forthese directions, most of the reddening is associated with a singlecloud complex, for example, the rho Ophiuchus molecular cloud, and as aresult, the observations probe moderately dense material. When combinedwith avaliable data for nearby directions, the survey provides the basisfor a comprehensive analysis of the chemistry for these species. Thechemical transitions affecting C2 and CN in cloud envelopes wereanalyzed. The depth into a cloud at which a transition takes place wascharacterized by tauuv, the grain optical depth at 1000 A.One transition at tauuv approx. = 2, which arises from, theconversion of C(+) into CO, affects the chemistries for both moleculesbecause of the key role this ion plays. A second one involvingproduction terms in the CN chemistry occurs at tauuv ofapprox. = 3; neutral reactions which C2 and CH is more important atlarger values for tauuv. The transition fromphotodissociation to chemical destruction takes place attauuv approx. = 4.5 for C2 and CN. The observational data forstars in Sco OB2, Cep OB3, and Taurus/Auriga were studied with chemicalrate equations containing the most important production and destructionmechanisms. Because the sample of stars in Sco OB2 includes sight lineswith Av ranging from 1-4 mag, sight lines dominated byphotochemistry could be analyzed separately from those controlled bygas-phase destruction. The analysis yielded values for two poorly knownrate constants for reactions involved in the production of CN; thereactions are C2 + N yields CN + C and C(+) + NH yields all products.The other directions were analyzed with the inferred values. Thepredicted column densities for C2 and CN agree with the observed valuesto better than 50%, and in most instances 20%. When combining theestimates for density and temperature derived from chemical modeling andmolecular excitation for a specific cloud, such as the rho Ophiuchusmolecular cloud, the portion of the cloud envelope probed by C2 and CNabsorption was found to be in pressure equilibrium.

ICCD speckle observations of binary stars. IX - A duplicity survey of the Pleiades, Praesepe, and IC 4665 clusters
Multiplicity of stars within clusters is a well-studied phenomenon.However, recent survey work done on the Hyades by Mason et al. (1993)would seem to indicate that even in the most often studied clusters,there may be binaries yet undiscovered. In order to expand the sample ofcluster binaries with potentially short-period visual orbits, a specklesurvey of 45 Pleiades, 54 Praesepe, and 22 IC 4665 bright stars (V isless than 10) for possible multiplicity was conducted at the KPNO 4 mMayall telescope between 1987 October and 1991 November. Of these, threenew binaries have been discovered: one in the Pleiades where the newcomponent may be spectroscopic, another in Praesepe which has beenconfirmed from examinations of archival observations and also has beenresolved by occultation, and the third in IC 4665. Continued study ofthese new binary stars could further refine the cluster distance modulias well as the cluster mass-luminosity relations.

Radial velocity measurements in the Pleiades
High-resolution radial velocities for 71 stars of both early and latespectral types in the Pleiades cluster have been obtained in order toinvestigate the possibility of establishing an early-type star velocitysystem by bootstrapping late-type velocity standards to early-type onesin young clusters. It is shown that in the absence of early-typevelocity standards the velocity scale of the early-type spectra in thecluster can be tied into the IAU velocity system by examining thevelocity distributions of both the early-type and the late-type stars,since the internal velocity dispersion in an open cluster is less thanabout 1 km/s. It is found that the cluster velocity of the Pleiades is6.0 km/s, with an observed velocity dispersion of 1 km/s. Based on thesevelocity results, a list of potentially constant velocity B and A starsis proposed for further studies to confirm the constancy of theirvelocities.

The measurement of precise radial velocities of early type stars
Methods are discussed which have made it possible to measure radialvelocities to within 1-3 km/s for O, B, and A spectral-type stars of allv sin i. The methods are based on the premise that neither the spectraltype nor the rotation velocity of a star need be well known prior to thevelocity measurement. This makes them particularly suitable for surveystudies or programs dealing with very heterogeneous samples of earlystars. Observations of early type members of the Pleiades and AlphaPersei open clusters at 3787 A shown that the radial-velocity zero pointused here for the early type stars is consistent with that for late-typestars to about 1 km/s for all spectral types and projected rotationvelocities.

X-ray studies of coeval star samples. II - The Pleiades cluster as observed with the Einstein Observatory
Coronal X-ray emission of the Pleiades stars is investigated, andmaximum likelihood, integral X-ray luminosity functions are computed forPleiades members in selected color-index ranges. A detailed search isconducted for long-term variability in the X-ray emission of those starsobserved more than once. An overall comparison of the survey resultswith those of previous surveys confirms the ubiquity of X-ray emissionin the Pleiades cluster stars and its higher rate of emission withrespect to older stars. It is found that the X-ray emission from dA andearly dF stars cannot be proven to be dissimilar to that of Hyades andfield stars of the same spectral type. The Pleiades cluster members showa real rise of the X-ray luminosity from dA stars to early dF stars.X-ray emission for the young, solarlike Pleiades stars is about twoorders of magnitude more intense than for the nearby solarlike stars.
