A Pair of Twisted Jets of Ionized Iron from L 1551 IRS 5
High-resolution near-infrared J-band imaging with the Subaru Telescopehas demonstrated, for the first time from the ground, two independentjets emanating from the protostar L 1551 IRS 5. Successive near-infraredspectroscopy has revealed that the jet emission is dominated by [Fe II]lines in the J- and H-bands. While the visual-extinction estimated fromthe [Fe II] line ratios reaches more than 20 mag in the close vicinityof IRS 5, it decreases rapidly at ~ 1'' from IRS 5 andremains constant around 7 mag at larger distances. The electron densityin the jets is estimated to be 106 cm-3 near IRS 5and is 104 to 105 cm-3 in their outersection. The twisted appearance of the jets, with bright knotsespecially prominent in the northern jet, is similar to the R-band jetsobserved with the Hubble Space Telescope. These results suggest that thetwisted structure and bright emission knots are intrinsic to the jetsand are not due to a spatial variation of the extinction.

Interstellar extinction in the Taurus dark clouds. II
The results of photoelectric photometry of 89 stars in the Vilniusseven-color system in the area of the Taurus dark clouds withcoordinates (1950) 4h16m-4h33m, +16 deg-+20 deg are presented.Photometric spectral types, absolute magnitudes, color excesses, interstellar extinctions and distances of the stars are determined. Thedistance of the dark nebula is found to be 140 pc and is in goodagreement with the distance determined by Straizys and Meistas (1980)for the dark nebula Khavtassi 286, 278. The average extinction in theinvestigated area is of the order of 1.4.
